Steve Hackett - Watcher of the skies (1996)
In 1996, 18 years after leaving Genesis, guitarist Steve Hackett released an album of himself and an all-star cast 'revisiting' various Genesis tracks from his years with the band. Featuring such performers as John Wetton, Bill Bruford, Tony Levin, Chester Thompson, Colin Blunstone, Pino Palladino, Paul Carrack, and The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the album isn't lacking for solid musical performances.
So what really is there to say about this offering? If you're a fan of Hackett-era Genesis, you want this. If you're a fan of progressive rock, you might want to get this. If you're a member of the 'Invisible Touch Club' looking for Hackett's answer to "One More Night", turn and walk away. If you're a fan of neither Genesis nor progressive rock, then there's no reason for you to even look at this. Hackett and friends do solid versions of earlier Genesis material, taking things to totally new places while staying true to the predecessors. Very nice. A better follow-up to Wind and Wuthering than anything the band itself has done since. But man oh man, had he only managed to get Peter Gabriel in on things to sing "Deja Vu"!
